Bitcoin

Not Speculation.
Sovereignty.

James Caw came to Bitcoin through the same lens that shaped his entire career: a concern for how value is created, held, and transferred. He did not come as a trader. He came as someone asking a harder question, what does sound money actually look like? He found the answer in Bitcoin, and has spent nearly a decade building his professional life around that conviction.

How James Got Here

Years in business strategy and marketing gave James a thorough education in how value moves, how it is created, how it erodes, and how it can be misappropriated. He watched businesses grow and fail. He studied what separated durable enterprises from short-lived ones. And through all of it, the question of money, what it really is, how it works, and who controls it, kept surfacing.

Bitcoin offered a clear and honest answer. Not a new payment app. Not another digital asset. But a monetary system with fixed supply, no issuer, and the capacity to be held without intermediaries. James recognised it for what it was: the most honest money ever created.

In August 2017, he founded SimplB with a clear mission, help South Africans access Bitcoin properly. Not speculatively. Not recklessly. But securely, legally, and in a way that would actually hold up across decades.

Why Bitcoin, and Nothing Else

"Bitcoin-only isn't stubbornness. It's clarity. When you understand what Bitcoin actually is, the alternatives don't compare."

— James Caw

James takes a Bitcoin-only position. Not as a tribal stance, but as a considered conclusion. He has studied the alternatives. His view is that Bitcoin's unique combination of properties, fixed supply, decentralisation, security, self-custody, and network effect, places it in a different category from every other digital asset. Combining Bitcoin with other cryptocurrencies introduces complexity without equivalent substance.

For James, sound money is a moral issue as much as a financial one. Inflation transfers wealth silently. Custodians fail. Systems are manipulated. Bitcoin, properly held in self-custody, removes those dependencies. That matters. Not just for individuals, but for families, businesses, and nations thinking about long-term financial security.

🔐

Self-Custody

Not your keys, not your coins. James believes self-custody is not optional. It is the point. Holding Bitcoin through a third party means not holding Bitcoin.

🔑

Multi-Signature

Institutional-grade multi-sig vault security for individuals and businesses. No single point of failure. Resilient across time, loss, and succession.

⚖️

Compliance

Bitcoin ownership in South Africa comes with regulatory obligations. SimplB helps clients hold Bitcoin legally, with proper SARS and FSCA compliance frameworks.

🌱

Long-Term Thinking

Bitcoin is not a trade. It is a multi-decade decision. James works with clients to think across generations, estate planning, succession, and family wealth preservation.

📚

Education First

You cannot hold something well that you do not understand. Every client relationship at SimplB begins with education, plain-language, jargon-free, honest.

🏛️

Sound Money

Fixed supply. No issuer. Mathematically verifiable. James sees Bitcoin as the first monetary system in history that cannot be debased by any government or institution.

South Africa's First Regulated Bitcoin-Only Platform

SimplB was founded in August 2017 by James Caw as a dedicated Bitcoin custody and advisory service. It was the first regulated Bitcoin-only brokerage in South Africa, built from scratch to serve individuals, families, financial advisors, and businesses who wanted to hold Bitcoin properly.

SimplB is registered as a Juristic Representative of CAEP Asset Managers (FSP No: 33933), which means its advisory services are regulated under the Financial Sector Conduct Authority framework. This matters. Bitcoin advice from an unregulated source carries risk that most people do not fully appreciate.

Clarity on Complex Things

James writes regularly on topics that most Bitcoin commentary glosses over: South African tax and regulatory implications, SARS compliance, exchange control, estate law, multi-signature security architecture, and Bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset.

His writing is practical, plain, and specific. He does not write to promote hype or generate clicks. He writes because there is a gap between what people are being told about Bitcoin and what they actually need to know to hold it properly, and he is committed to closing that gap.

Recent articles have covered CARF reporting obligations, the 2026 Budget's impact on Bitcoin holders, Bitcoin and divorce law in South Africa, and how multi-signature custody protects against the key risks most holders ignore. The full archive is at simplb.co.za/articles.

The Book & Podcast

The Strategic Reserve: Navigating Bitcoin Securely is James' definitive guide to Bitcoin custody and long-term holding strategy. It is written for the serious Bitcoin holder. The individual, family, or business that has moved past the question of whether to own Bitcoin and is now focused on doing it properly.

The accompanying podcast brings that same rigour to weekly conversations: covering the mechanics of multi-signature security, the complexities of Bitcoin estate planning, South African regulatory developments, and the broader case for Bitcoin as a reserve asset.

The Strategic Reserve Podcast

Weekly episodes on building and securing a Bitcoin reserve, from first principles to advanced custody architecture. Available on Apple Podcasts and at thestrategicreserve.co.za.

From Individuals to Institutions

James works with a wide range of clients, from people buying their first Bitcoin to financial advisors building Bitcoin frameworks for their practices, to business owners considering Bitcoin as a corporate treasury strategy. What unites them is a shared seriousness: they are not looking for speculation. They are looking to hold something real, for a long time, without getting it wrong.

He also speaks at the intersection of Bitcoin and national economic policy, having moderated sessions at the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Summit in 2025 on how nations and institutions might approach Bitcoin as a reserve asset.
